Using ketchup as a special ingredient to elevate the flavor, this light, healthy turkey chili is simple, quick and often gets compliments for being so delicious.

Garnishes to try

  • Garlic chili sauce – almost always eat with this turkey chili
  • Shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella)
  • Sliced avocado or guacamole
  • Tortilla chips or any corn chips
  • Sour cream
  • Jalapenos
  • Lime wedges
  • Salsa
  • Cilantro

Using real tomatoes instead of canned crushed tomatoes

Step 1: (Optionally but recommended) Peel tomatoes. Either slice the skins from top to bottom on 4-8 sides and and peel the skins off by hand, or immerse them in boiling water for 30-60 seconds until the skins wrinkle and peel them off.

Step 2: (Optionally) For authenticity and taste, cut out the white cores and deseed the tomatoes manually.

Step 3: Cut tomatoes into small wedges before blending 1/2 or all using an immersion blender. Don’t over blend but turn into a nice crushed tomatoes consistency.

Step 4: Drop into chili and optionally add sugar to taste to offset any sourness.

28 ounces of crushed tomatoes is about 2 lbs. of tomatoes. This chili recipe also works and tastes great with fewer tomatoes, specifically half the amount. However, the sauce may not be a rich red color. Adding ketchup to the sauce is highly recommended in this case.

In a large pot over medium-low heat, add oil and cook onion, celery, bell peppers and garlic. Stir occasionally.
